Prolate-spherical shape coexistence at N=28 in 44S.
The structure of 44S has been studied by using delayed γ and electron spectroscopy. The decay rates of the 02+ isomeric state to the 2(1)+ and 0(1)+ states, measured for the first time, lead to a reduced transition probability B(E2: 2(1)+→0(2)+)=8.4(26) e(2) fm4 and a monopole strength ρ2(E0: 0(2)+→0(1)+)=8.7(7)×10(-3). Comparisons to shell model calculations point towards prolate-spherical sha...
متن کاملShells and Shapes in the N=28 isotones
New experimental results on 43S and 44S reveal that these nuclei are located in a transitional region of prolate-spherical shape coexistence between the spherical 48Ca and the oblate 42Si. The origin of the deformation is discussed in terms of the evolution of the single particle energy levels leading to the compression of the orbitals in the sd and p f shells for protons and neutrons, respecti...
متن کاملnp-nh bands in the N=28 isotones
The existence of n-particle n-hole deformed yrare bands in the N=28 isotones is explored using full pf -shell diagonalizations and the Lanczos Strength Function method. We find different 2p-2h and 4p-4h collective bands that, when allowed to mix, more often disappear. Only the 2p-2h yrare band in Cr and the 4p-4h yrare band in Ni survive, and only in this latter case, due to the reduced density...
متن کاملShape coexistence in the neutron-deficient isotope
Neutron-deficient nuclei near the Z=82 closed shell exhibit the phenomenon of shape coexistence where the nucleus can take on oblate, prolate, and even spherical shapes at around the same excitation energy. The single-proton excitations in 187 Tl (with Z=81) can be used as a probe into the microscopic mechanisms behind this phenomenon. Previous studies of 187 Tl deduced the presence of coexisti...

Masses, deformations, radii, and single-particle properties of the very neutron-rich Sulfur isotopes are investigated in the framework of the self-consistent mean-field theory. The stability of the N=28 magic gap around 44 S is discussed.
